We bring you some inspiration & ideas for events for the new year, with a brand new Gaelforce Dublin adventure race, the Quest series is going international and there are some brilliant ideas for swims, runs and cycles too. Listen to our podcast from Today FM too.

1. Adventure race - Gaelforce Dublin

This is the first time that Gaelforce have run an event in Dublin, and it has two distances - 29km or 49km - in which you run, cycle and kayak from Tallaght stadium up the Dublin mountains to Bohernabreena.

  • 29km: 1km run / 9km cycle / 1km kayak / 8.5km trail run/walk in mountains / 8.5km cycle / 1km run to finish - including Kippure Mountain (not to the top though!)
  • 49km: 1km run / 16.5km cycle (including dirt road and gravel track) / 1.5km kayak / 13km trail run/walk in mountains / 16.5km cycle / 1km run to finish

What kind of bike to use?

The race is on 75% sealed road, 20% forest track and 5% dirt track so a Cyclocross bike is best if you have one. If not, you could try a hybrid or a road bike with hardcore tyres on it, or a mountain bike with slick tyres. Be sure you know how to fix a puncture and have the gear if you're using a road bike! Best tyres if you're using a road bike are Continental gatorskin tyres.

Also, don't forget that Gaelforce West has shifted date to 24 June 2017, to avoid the crowds in August.

COST - €85 plus booking fee (€4.50) for Gaelforce Dublin. Take note that the entry fee might go up in the last week before the race, so be sure to get entered early! 450 people are booked in already & entries can go up to around 800/1000 with people starting in different waves.

2. Do a cycling sportive

Sportive’s are great because they’re not races, you’re not timed, so they can be non-competitive if that's what you're after. There are plenty of people who treat them like a race, but you don't have to. Another bonus is that there are drink stops and you get fed lunch on the way, usually soup and sandwiches. They’re v relaxed and friendly but you can go hard & fast if you want to

  • Tour de Connemara - based out of Clifden - 80km & 140km options - stunning scenery
  • There's a barbecue at the finish & after party always great fun
  • Event is on 27 May 2017
  • COST - around €40/45

  • Tour de Burren - based from Ballyvaughan in Co Clare - gorgeous area for cycling
  • Loads of course options - 10km family loop - 52km Burren circuit - 100km - 160km
  • There's a lunch time food stop in Lisdoonvarna
  • Event is on 17 June 2017
  • COST - €35/45 depending on distance

3. Choose a new run to do

If you’re ready for a new challenge - try 26 Extreme’s Mourne Way 10km night run in the Mourne Mountains

  • The course is fully marked and lit up with strobe lights. It's trail run around the mountain bike park in Rostrevor (Kilbroney Park), just outside Newry.
  • There are marshalls to help direct you throughout the course & there'll be music pumping - fun!
  • Starts at 7.30pm on Friday 27th January
  • COST - €30

IMRA race - 27 December 2016 - 8km race - Christmas Turkey Trail Race - around Djouce - fancy dress run

COST - usually around €10/15 euro, have to join IMRA too for the year (€10)

4. Pick an open water swim

Escape from Ireland is a swim from Ireland’s Eye back to Howth - taking place on 9 July 2017

  • It's a 1.9km point to point race rather than an out and back course, with boats provided to take you across the Channel to Ireland's Eye for the start by dropping you off onto the beach!
  • Wetsuits are allowed
  • Entry includes boat to the start. Advice is it’s for experienced swimmers only, due to currents, but it’s not too bad
  • COST - €35

Warrior of the Sea in Sligo is a more hardcore sea swim - taking place on Saturday 5 August 2017 - it's very difficult but also very cool

  • It involves open ocean swimming around the coast from Rosses Point, out across the channel (through seaweed/reeds), you have to run across & swim around Coney Island and on to Strandhill
  • Wetsuits are allowed with prizes for skin & suit swimmers
  • It's a great weekend away in Strandhill, with plenty of accommodation options, pubs, cafes, dinner options - good craic & relaxed atmosphere
  • Can be run on Rosses Point Beach or Mullaghmore Beach if weather conditions are too rough - has happened a couple of times in recent years
  • COST - €40ish

5. Great news as Quest events go international

This is a great success story of an event that started in Killarney (Adventure race) in the south west and is now expanding abroad into an international adventure race series. The events were founded by Ollie Kirwan - a Dubliner - who ran few races in Kerry, then expanded to Wicklow, and Achill & set up Elite Events.

In Ireland, there are four races to choose from in 2017 - Killarney (March & October), Glendalough (April) & Achill (September)

Three new international races in the UK in 2017:

  • England - Peak District - Beautiful rural mountainous region between Manchester & Sheffield.
  • Scotland - Lough Ness - total novelty factor! Closest town is Inverness. Scenic part of the Scottish Highlands, with heather moors & lakes
  • Wales - Betws Y Coed - in Snowdonia Forest park on the Holyhead Road in North Wales - just an hour from Holyhead
  • COST - €85 for Irish ones (UK prices TBC)
