Both Irish sea swimmers have made huge contributions to the sport over the last number of years. Nuala Moore is one of Ireland’s most experienced long-distance and ice swimmers. She came second this year in the 200m Winter Swimming Championships in Russia. The race took place in a chilly -5ºC in the city of Tyumen, Siberia.

She has also completed a relay swim around the coast of Ireland which consisted of a journey of 1308km in 2006 and did the Bering Strait Swim relay which is a six day relay crossing from Russia to Alaska in 2013. Moore was also previously nominated on Outsider Magazine’s People of the Year Awards in 2013.

In the male category is Wicklow’s Ger Kennedy. Kennedy has been hugely active on the international and Irish sea swimming circuit. Kennedy recently took part in the 52m Under Ice Swim Challenge in the Lena River in Russia. The competitions sees the water drop to -1ºC and the air as low as -13ºC. He has previously completed a 24 hour open swim challenge in aid of Epilepsy Ireland.

The Wicklow swimmer has also completed the 60 minute Ice Bath Challenge and recently won the Best Senior Newcomer award from the Long Distance Swim Association
