Tidal bore trips from Bonosurf

Tidal bore trips from Bonosurf

New company Bonosurf is offering organised tours to surf a newly discovered tidal bore wave in Sumatra. The unique wave, called the ‘Bono’ is located deep in the jungle, 80km from the sea.

For the uninitiated, a tidal bore wave is found on a river and is created through the tidal push at the change from low to high tide. Depending on the width and depth of a river, this push propagates through the river and creates an energetic wave and water flow. As it hits shallower banks and sections, the wave is transformed into a surfable form, breaking for kilometres without end! The ‘Bono’ meanders its way along the riverbank of the river Kampar, for up to 50km.

This type of wave is not common and is found in only a few rivers around the world. These waves include ‘Pororoca’ of the Amazon, ‘Silver Dragon’ on the Qiantang river in China and the ‘Severn Bore’ in the UK.

The newly discovered Indonesian ‘Bono’ counts among the top three tidal bores in the world. Unlike other waves of this type, Bono is easily accessed by land or air.

Bonosurf offers all-inclusive packages which includes boat rental with fuel and trained pilots, accommodation, daily briefings and the necessary local permits.

Each day you will be brought out to the wave where a special boat will position surfers in front of the wave and pick you up when you fall, miss a wave or are simply too tired to carry on. Depending on the moon phase and tidal ranges, Bonosurf offers up to six consecutive days of surfing, with possible riding times of around two hours per day.
