In 2008 Tyrone Currie set sail from Strangford Lough in his home-built catamaran Gillaroo and proceeded to spend three years circumnavigating the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, and through the Panama and Suez canals.
On Thursday 23 February at 7.30pm, Currie will present a slideshow at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre of his exploits.
Some highlights of the trip were the wildlife of the Galapagos and Borneo, and the hospitality of Papua New Guinea and the Sudan. The problems included dealing with breakages and system failures onboard, near collisions through inexperienced crew and the risk of piracy off Somalia.
Entry to this event costs stg£5 which covers stg£2 for tea/coffee and tray bakes. The remainder goes to Raleigh International, a youth and sustainable development charity providing expeditions and volunteer projects abroad.
