Do you have what it takes to survive a three-day trekking challenge in the mountains?

Following the success of the Comeragh Survival Challenge last year, the Mercy Hospital Foundation is running two survival challenges in 2010. The Wicklow Mountains Survival Challenge takes place this 1, 2 and 3 May while the Comeragh Mountain Survival Challenge runs on 24, 25 and 26 September 2010. The concept for the event and the logistics are provided by The Adventure Agency.

According to Kieran Coughlan, Comeragh Challenge participant in 2009, “The challenge will bring you to the limits both psychologically and physically. Anyone who wants to prove themselves should try it.”

The good news is that before the challenge starts you’ll be provided with intensive training which will cover the essentials of survival: fire, shelter, food, rescue, navigation and wilderness first aid.

That night will be your last taste of luxury as you bed down for a few hours sleep. After that you are on you and your team mate are on your own as you endeavour to get to the mission base 50km away over the next two days.

You must complete the mission on foot. Not only will you have to trek 50km, you will also have to complete a number of challenges along the route, navigate to food dumps, build your own shelter, sleep in it and cater for yourself using only basic equipment and you must use the skills you learned to survive. A strict time limit will apply; slow teams will be eliminated as the challenge progresses.

The aim of the Mountain Survival Challenges 2010 is to raise €100,000 to purchase state of the art equipment, to enhance and develop services, and to help hospital staff in providing a world-class service to the patients. In order to take part in a challenge you must raise a minimum of €650 per person.
