Great Island Kayak Race

Great Island Kayak Race

27/12/2009

Some say time and tide will wait for no man but even King Canute would be
happy with the tides this year which mean that the full course of Great Island
Kayak Race can take place again.

Basically anyone with a paddle wants to make a splash at this increasingly popular event and it’s getting on more ‘must do’ lists than your average shove from shore. Last year’s tides meant a shorter version had to be run but this year it’s back to the traditional 27km course which brings paddlers anti-clockwise from Marlogue Marina through Cork Harbour
and circumnavigates Great Island, passing the beautiful town of Cobh along the way.
The main event has three classes – elites, tourers and doubles – and this
year there will also be a shorter route for juniors, thanks to extra help from
Phoenix Kayak Club. Highwater is at 1pm so participants will be briefed at 10.30am for an 11am start. Those with competitive streaks should finish in a little over two hours but more sedate paddlers are very welcome too.
I can’t think of a better way to dip your oar into the wonderful world of
sea kayaking or to work off a few mince pies. For more details, contact organiser Michael Morris, tel. +353(0)87-9931990; email: info@greatislandkayakrace.com; or to register visit: www.greatislandkayakrace.com
