For all the wannabe surfers out there who don’t get to out as often as they’d like so are frustrated by their progress, here’s a piece of kit to work your surfing muscles even on dry land and have fun to boot.
The idea behind the Original Indo Board (€175) is to balance on a flat piece of wood which in turn is balanced on a cylindrical roller. Trickier than it seems, many a rider has come a cropper so have someone give you a hand the first few times and never try to use this on wooden floors or shiny surfaces.
Once you’ve mastered the basics, the sky is the limit when it comes to tricks – from walking up and down to hanging 10 or performing ollies. It might just seem like larking around but the good news is that this strangely addictive toy will be giving your legs a serious workout and improving your core stability. Don’t believe me? Well the Indo Board is to be found at the US Olympic Training Centers and the Slater surfer brothers (Stephen, Sean, and Kelly) are also purported to use them.
The Original Indo Board, which comes with a demo DVD, is also a perfect workout for anyone who loves to skateboarding, snowboarding or simply wants improve their core conditioning. Also in the package is the inflatable IndoFLO Balance Cushion which can be used instead of the roller. Available from Bundoran Surf Co, Co Donegal; Great Outdoors, Dublin; Wind and Wave, Dublin; Jamie Knox Waterworld, Co Kerry; Ningaloo Surf, Bandon and more.
